Larry
Lots of anger of Larry Brown these past two days. "I got rich from writing crappy books" Mitch Albom basically says: seeya. But I'll miss Larry. Forget for a moment that he's a fellow member of the Tribe. He took the Pistons two years in a row to the finals when they couldn't get there without him. And Flip or no Flip, they will not go back next year without him. Watch Saunders have to play Darko serious minutes (in place of Dice?). That should be fun. A seven footer who can't rebound, block, shoot, or even run. Wow.
Yeah, Brown's got the jimmy legs - always moving on. But was he really looking to get out? Or did ESPN merely ask the question enough ("Larry, are you going to Cleveland or not!") that we just assume he was out the door? News is not news until the station makes it so.

Not only will Detroit not win another championship without Brown, I doubt they'll make it back to the Finals (although Pat Riley is doing them a big favor by creating stress and uncertainty down in Miami-- thanks, Gordon Gekko!). I agree this is a big mistake (I love Brown as a coach) but it's also pretty typical Pistons behavior post-championship: I remember how quickly those Bad Boy teams were taken apart after they lost to Chicago in '91. Hope this doesn't mean another 13 years before they win again.

ESPN...well, any channel that employs Jay Mariotti clearly has its blowhard switch on "high." Across the board, they are desperate to see Shaq win again (which he won't), so their fierceness about this detroit story is not surprising.

As far as I know, NH has only one sports tradition: rioting after every Patriots playoff game, whether they win or lose it. Or at least that's what happens in Durham.

I dunno. I think Larry wanted to stick around a little longer.

Speaking of ESPN, have you been glued to their fifty states in fifty days campaign or what? Today, New Hampshire. Stuart Scott: "New Hampshire is rich in sports tradition." Tomorrow, North Dakota probably. Fifty days of this.

Oh, and I'd rather watch Detroit play 4 v. 5 than see Darko on the floor.
