Lists
Someone told me today that my first post sucked. So here’s another effort:

A list, inspired by Spin.

I have a hate/love relationship with lists. Maybe it’s the Roland Barthes in me (likes and disklikes; I dislike lists as I construct a list about this dislike...). But I do like music lists for how they allow you to write about music in funny and insightful ways (ok, I will do neither here).
Here’s my list for best 2004 new music which is most likely not new at all since I’m late to the trends.

  • MF Doom (aka Madlib). Mm…Food and the Special Herbs have been rotating heavily on my CD player and iPod. This is what happens when you bring together two great pleasures of life: eating and sampling. Listen: Songs like “Beer” and “Cookies.” Where else can you hear the Cookie Monster sampled? COOKIE.
  • Detroit Cobras. All garage. All the time.
  • “Happy Pillz” - Murs featuring Aesop Rock. I have no idea how old this is. But I love the riffs and silly raps. Discovered it the other day when I accidentally downloaded it.

I was cooling at the park with a couple of other Jukies
An animated glitch suspended like milk money bullies
I calculate my comfort zone by how baggy the hoodie
I calibrate pyrotechnics on how crappy the jewelry
(I keep it Dirty) Like What? My vibes on that old "Ha ha ha Stick 'Em"
Like a 1950-something wire hanger abortion victim
99 bottles of happy pills on the wall
Take 'em down, pass 'em around before me and MURS eat 'em all

  • Bebel Gilberto. The Gilberto legacy lives on. I have some discs of her father and her father with Sam Getz. But her voice is smooth. Seductive. It’s like listening to someone enjoy sex.
  • Delivery Man - Elvis Costello. Some say more of the same. I say: so what? Elvis is Elvis, man. Always good.
  • Verve Remixes. Not new at all. I’ve had one of these for a couple of years. But listen to Sarah Vaughn or Billie Holiday remixed and it’s all heaven. “Whatever Lola wants . . .”
  • Dzihan and Kamien. Anybody heard of this? Another downloaded accident influenced by a random track heard on WDET. The Arab souk meets techno. Fantastic.
  • “Ready or Not Here I Come” – the Delphonics. Totally not new. But I heard it the other day and was reminded of how good this tune is. It puts the Fugee's cover to shame. Remember that scene in Jackie Brown where Sam Jackson is surprised that the bails bondman has a Delphonics record? Put this tune on and imagine you are in a Tarantino flick.
